I saw this part of myself for the first time. And it was ugly. (My unconscious racial bias.)

Hi my love.

Today, I am going to tell you a story.
.
It’s not a pretty story or a story I am proud of, but I think sharing it may serve as a mirror for you. It may facilitate a powerful shift in you. It may get you to think, evaluate, and choose to create from a place you have not yet.

I hope it allows more love, honesty and fairness to come through you and out of you in your daily experience.

I was in grad school. I was living in Dallas. I was pulling into a nice shopping area called Highland Park Village. (This was long before I could afford to shop at such a place. However, I would go to Starbucks there, order a Venti Ice Water, and work on my business.)
.
As I am pulling in, there is a Black man in a nice care in front of me. He is an older gentleman, taking his time pulling out. It’s a pretty tight parking spot and he is maneuvering to pull out so that he can go past me and I can pull in.
.
Seeing as how I am not the most patient person, am getting irritated AF. “What is this guy doing? Why is he going so slow? Come on, c’mon, guy. Let’s go, let’s go. Hurry it up!” I say quietly to myself.
.
What happened next, changed me forever.
.
I saw something that I couldn’t unsee and learned something I couldn’t unlearn about some ugly that had lived within me. I saw my unconscious racial bias.

In the upcoming months, I learned more about my privilege, prejudice, and bias and the racism that lives in America. Today, I consider to be an advocate, ally, and anti-racist.
